Thiruvannamalai Deepam: A Century of Spiritual Enlightenment-Rudratree

 Thiruvannamalai Deepam, also renowned as Karthikai Deepam, is a luminous festival celebrated with deep spiritual fervor. For over a century, this event has been a cornerstone of devotion in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, especially notable for the distribution of Rudraksha during the Girivalam (circumambulation of the Annamalai Hill). This tradition has been a vital aspect of the festival, signifying the deep-rooted spiritual culture in the region.

 The festival’s highlight is the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop Annamalai Hill. This sacred lamp, lit with several hundred liters of ghee (clarified butter), stands as a beacon of hope and spirituality. The flame, which is kept alight for ten days, is visible from miles around, symbolizing the divine light of Lord Shiva. This enormous undertaking, requiring meticulous preparation and devotion, embodies the essence of the festival – the victory of light over darkness.

 The Girivalam, or the circumambulation of the sacred hill, is a pivotal ritual. Devotees walk around the hill, a distance of approximately 14 kilometers, as an act of devotion and penance. This practice symbolizes the journey of life, with the hill representing the spiritual center around which one’s existence revolves. It is a physical and spiritual journey, where each step taken is a step closer to enlightenment.

 During this holy month, wearing Rudraksha, believed to be tears of Lord Shiva, gains special significance. Rudraksha beads are known for their spiritual and healing properties, and wearing them is thought to bring one closer to Shiva’s energy. This connection is especially potent during the Deepam festival, enhancing the spiritual experience and providing mental clarity and inner peace.
