The sacred hill of Tirumala, home to Lord Venkateswara (Tirupati Balaji), is revered not only as one of the richest temples in the world but also as a profound spiritual center that cleanses karma and grants divine blessings. Among the many celestial stories linked to Tirumala, one remarkable tale connects the Moon God, Chandra, and the powerful remedy Tirupati offers to those under his influence.
The Curse of Chandra: A Lesson in Ego and Consequences
Chandra, the Moon God, was known for his radiant beauty and charm. Among his 27 wives, all daughters of the sage Daksha, he favored Rohini the most. This partiality deeply angered Daksha, who cursed Chandra to lose his brilliance and wither away, causing immense imbalance in the cosmos.
As the curse began to take effect, Chandra started losing his luster, turning weak and pale. The gods and sages urged him to seek refuge in penance, and it was then that Chandra turned to Lord Vishnu, who manifested at Tirumala.
Tirupati Balaji: The Place of Chandra’s Redemption
Chandra performed deep penance at Tirupati, praying to Lord Vishnu for forgiveness and restoration. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu partially relieved Chandra of his curse, allowing him to wax and wane in a cyclic pattern – symbolizing both light and darkness, gain and loss, humility and glory. Thus, the moon phases were born, and Chandra was restored with a renewed purpose – to teach humanity the cycles of life, emotions, and the value of balance.
Chandra in Astrology: Blessing or Challenge
